Director: Guillermo del Toro Release Date: December 29th, 2006 Pan's Labyrinth is weirdly scary, but comforting. I think what's scary is that the child (Ofelia) has to grow up faster than she has to because her biological father is dead, her mother is very ill, and her stepdad is abusive. I think del Toro wanted to make a correlation to children trying to believe in magic and fairy tales to compensate for their toxic environment around them. High key lighting was used when Ofelia was in the "other world" of magic and creatures. It shows how much happier she is escaping her reality vs. the low key lighting used when she is in her reality. I like this movie, but I do not love this movie. I understand why this movie might be someone's favorite film because it can be relatable. The only thing I didn't like was the "fables" type of storytelling.
