Director: Lin-Manuel Miranda Release Date: November 19, 2021 I would not consider myself a person who enjoys musicals. Now, I appreciate the hard work and talent put into these shows; however, I do not find myself excited to go to a musical. Going into tick, tick… BOOM!, I did not have very high expectations. I thought I was going to be bored out of my mind. I was shocked that I thought it was pleasant. I have a new respect for the effort it takes to make musicals because I have never seen it from the perspective of a musical writer. I am impressed with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s take in this musical film as it truly reflects Jonathan Larson’s endurance and stress. I feel like if Jonathan Larson were to be alive, he would have loved watching this appreciation film. The music enhanced the story line, and if you took all of that out, it would not be an enjoyable movie to watch. With all that said, the only thing I disliked was that some of the musical productions felt like I was watching a music video (not all of them though). Those parts didn’t feel natural as it just disrupted the actual plot and vibe to the movie. I feel like a proper rating of tick, tick… BOOM! would be 6/10.

Director: Michael Showalter Release Date: September 17, 2021 I knew a little bit about the Bakkers just because my dad brought up the subject of televangelists in the summer. I don’t recall how the subject was brought up, but I have done a Wikipedia search on them before I watched this film. The mise-en-scene of The Eyes of Tammy Faye was extremely impressive. I think they did a really good job mimicking the style of the 60s-90s. They transformed Jessica Chastain into Tammy Faye with the crusty, spider leg looking lashes and the overlined lips. Fun fact: Jim Bakker had a face lift. The face lift was never mentioned in the actual movie, but you can tell when they made Andrew Garfield’s face look “stretched” out. The whole cast did a wonderful job with their portrayal and I was very impressed with Chastain and Garfield’s accents. It was pretty spot on! This movie was funny at times, and I never knew Tammy was lowkey progressive (quite interesting). The set design is so accurate of what the actual PTL club looked like. I think this has a good chance of winning the Oscar for costume and makeup. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes I, Tonya. I, Tonya and The Eyes of Tammy Faye have the same style, in my opinion. I think it’s because of the biography/drama genre, but The Eyes of Tammy Faye is definitely more lighthearted. I liked this movie a lot! Director: Ari Aster
Release Date: July 3rd, 2019 I hate Midsommar. It's extremely disturbing and the story line is garbage. This movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller, but I think it's cringey. The characters have no motivation whatsoever other than writing their thesis paper. I also think a lot of the scenes were so unnecessary, which made this movie a whopping 2.5 hours!!!! What was the purpose of all the culty dance scenes and inappropriate nudity scenes?? Something I did appreciate was the attention to detail when the characters were on shrooms. The whole background was wavy and the trees were "moving." I think that was a really cool trick that gave the viewers more insight of what the characters are seeing. I also LOVED Florence Pugh's performance in the first 30 minutes. Her crying screams made me really emotional, and I really empathized with the character. I read an article about how Sweden's REAL Midsummer Festival has a negative connotation now after this movie was released. Although Midsommar was inspired by the real festival, a large chunk of it is fictional and does not actually happen at the festival. Not sure how I would feel if I were Ari Aster and disrespected a cultural tradition... He could've probably named it something different other than Midsommar. I would not recommend this to anyone unless you like weird, culty movies. |
