Director: Ari Aster
Release Date: July 3rd, 2019 I hate Midsommar. It's extremely disturbing and the story line is garbage. This movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller, but I think it's cringey. The characters have no motivation whatsoever other than writing their thesis paper. I also think a lot of the scenes were so unnecessary, which made this movie a whopping 2.5 hours!!!! What was the purpose of all the culty dance scenes and inappropriate nudity scenes?? Something I did appreciate was the attention to detail when the characters were on shrooms. The whole background was wavy and the trees were "moving." I think that was a really cool trick that gave the viewers more insight of what the characters are seeing. I also LOVED Florence Pugh's performance in the first 30 minutes. Her crying screams made me really emotional, and I really empathized with the character. I read an article about how Sweden's REAL Midsummer Festival has a negative connotation now after this movie was released. Although Midsommar was inspired by the real festival, a large chunk of it is fictional and does not actually happen at the festival. Not sure how I would feel if I were Ari Aster and disrespected a cultural tradition... He could've probably named it something different other than Midsommar. I would not recommend this to anyone unless you like weird, culty movies.
