Director: Michael Showalter Release Date: September 17, 2021 I knew a little bit about the Bakkers just because my dad brought up the subject of televangelists in the summer. I don’t recall how the subject was brought up, but I have done a Wikipedia search on them before I watched this film. The mise-en-scene of The Eyes of Tammy Faye was extremely impressive. I think they did a really good job mimicking the style of the 60s-90s. They transformed Jessica Chastain into Tammy Faye with the crusty, spider leg looking lashes and the overlined lips. Fun fact: Jim Bakker had a face lift. The face lift was never mentioned in the actual movie, but you can tell when they made Andrew Garfield’s face look “stretched” out. The whole cast did a wonderful job with their portrayal and I was very impressed with Chastain and Garfield’s accents. It was pretty spot on! This movie was funny at times, and I never knew Tammy was lowkey progressive (quite interesting). The set design is so accurate of what the actual PTL club looked like. I think this has a good chance of winning the Oscar for costume and makeup. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes I, Tonya. I, Tonya and The Eyes of Tammy Faye have the same style, in my opinion. I think it’s because of the biography/drama genre, but The Eyes of Tammy Faye is definitely more lighthearted. I liked this movie a lot!
