Director: Michael Showalter Release Date: September 17, 2021 I knew a little bit about the Bakkers just because my dad brought up the subject of televangelists in the summer. I don’t recall how the subject was brought up, but I have done a Wikipedia search on them before I watched this film. The mise-en-scene of The Eyes of Tammy Faye was extremely impressive. I think they did a really good job mimicking the style of the 60s-90s. They transformed Jessica Chastain into Tammy Faye with the crusty, spider leg looking lashes and the overlined lips. Fun fact: Jim Bakker had a face lift. The face lift was never mentioned in the actual movie, but you can tell when they made Andrew Garfield’s face look “stretched” out. The whole cast did a wonderful job with their portrayal and I was very impressed with Chastain and Garfield’s accents. It was pretty spot on! This movie was funny at times, and I never knew Tammy was lowkey progressive (quite interesting). The set design is so accurate of what the actual PTL club looked like. I think this has a good chance of winning the Oscar for costume and makeup. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes I, Tonya. I, Tonya and The Eyes of Tammy Faye have the same style, in my opinion. I think it’s because of the biography/drama genre, but The Eyes of Tammy Faye is definitely more lighthearted. I liked this movie a lot!

Release Date: July 3rd, 2019 I hate Midsommar. It's extremely disturbing and the story line is garbage. This movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller, but I think it's cringey. The characters have no motivation whatsoever other than writing their thesis paper. I also think a lot of the scenes were so unnecessary, which made this movie a whopping 2.5 hours!!!! What was the purpose of all the culty dance scenes and inappropriate nudity scenes?? Something I did appreciate was the attention to detail when the characters were on shrooms. The whole background was wavy and the trees were "moving." I think that was a really cool trick that gave the viewers more insight of what the characters are seeing. I also LOVED Florence Pugh's performance in the first 30 minutes. Her crying screams made me really emotional, and I really empathized with the character. I read an article about how Sweden's REAL Midsummer Festival has a negative connotation now after this movie was released. Although Midsommar was inspired by the real festival, a large chunk of it is fictional and does not actually happen at the festival. Not sure how I would feel if I were Ari Aster and disrespected a cultural tradition... He could've probably named it something different other than Midsommar. I would not recommend this to anyone unless you like weird, culty movies. Director: Garth Jennings
Release Date: December 22nd, 2021 Okay, honestly, Sing 2 was an experience. I've watched this movie two times in the movie theater, and it's phenomenal. I thought that the first Sing movie was mid, so I wasn't expecting much out of this second one. HOLY, was I wrong!! Something about the music and the one liners Miss Crawly had were 10/10. I thoroughly enjoyed all the graphics, too. During the end scene of "Out of This World" musical production, there were tons of lights, planets, smog, etc. It looked like I was watching an actual concert (obviously it's animated). Sing 2 definitely has a better plot than Sing, and I will argue that if necessary. My favorite scene was when Miss Crawly was going to Clay Calloway's house in a Corvette. I love Miss Crawly. Best character ever. Director: Jared Hess
Release Date: June 11th, 2004 It was my first time watching Napoleon Dynamite a couple weeks ago. Mr. C makes lots of references in psych from this movie, and I never really understood them. Now, I can say that I understand them. I can also understand the class of 2017's senior shirts "VOTE FOR PE17RO." There's not really a plot to this movie, but I was still entertained. It's stupid funny, and I think it would be even funnier if I was in 6th grade. This isn't the funniest movie in the world, but I think it's funny when I am in a silly mood. Something I really liked about this movie is the color palette: very pale, soft, vintage tones. The color palette helps with the setting of the movie. I also wonder if this movie was filmed with a film camera because there is a grainy effect. I would recommend this to someone who was in the mood to watch a goofy comedy with some friends. This would definitely a bad movie to watch by yourself. Director: Guillermo del Toro Release Date: October 16th, 2015 Crimson Peak was an interesting movie. I liked it, but I didn't love it. People who have watched lots of Del Toro films say that this one was one of the worst out of his collection. I've only watched two others, but if this is one of the bad ones, I didn't think it was that bad. I think it's kind of weird that the sister and the brother were in a relationship, but maybe Del Toro did that on purpose because of the era. The whole point is that it didn't sit right with me. A part of his auteur theory are his extravagant sets, use of color, and monsters. Throughout this movie, there's a pop of red in tons of scenes. The ghost looked really fake, but that's kind of understandable because I feel like that would be the hardest to make look realistic. The plot was predictable especially when Edith (the main character) got sick because Lady Lucille Sharpe was poisoning her. Everything was so expected after that. It was good, but not great. Director: Guillermo del Toro Release Date: December 29th, 2006 Pan's Labyrinth is weirdly scary, but comforting. I think what's scary is that the child (Ofelia) has to grow up faster than she has to because her biological father is dead, her mother is very ill, and her stepdad is abusive. I think del Toro wanted to make a correlation to children trying to believe in magic and fairy tales to compensate for their toxic environment around them. High key lighting was used when Ofelia was in the "other world" of magic and creatures. It shows how much happier she is escaping her reality vs. the low key lighting used when she is in her reality. I like this movie, but I do not love this movie. I understand why this movie might be someone's favorite film because it can be relatable. The only thing I didn't like was the "fables" type of storytelling. I absolutely LOVED Shape of Water. I am not going to lie, I had low expectations going into this because Mr. H and Hailey did not like this film. So when I watched the film, it exceeded my expectations. Elisa, the main character, is mute and is played by Sally Hawkins. She did an AMAZING job especially since she didn't speak whatsoever. The entire movie is green, and I kept asking Hailey what the importance of green is in the movie. I think green represents "renewed energy." The "renewed energy" expresses Elisa's schedule break. She stopped her regular schedule to start fresh beginnings with herself and friends. Even with Giles (the gay best friend), repainted his advertisement green. The obvious message of Shape of Water is to love beyond differences. I understand the weirdness of fish-human love, but I don't think of it that way. I think of how the fish accepts her for her differences. When Strickland (the antagonist) sexualized Elisa's muteness and said some nasty things to her, it's a great way to compare the fish's love with society's way of seeing her. I really enjoyed this movie, especially the music and the aesthetic.

Release Date: January 20, 2006 Yes, I watched High School Musical. I haven't watched this movie in about 5 years, and I forgot all about it. I was at KYA this weekend, and we had to do "mandatory fun time." The options for "mandatory fun time" was either watching a talent show or watching HSM. This movie is actually really relatable because it shows the struggles of being in high school like cliques, self esteem, and pressure from adults. I think Disney are absolute geniuses. Think about it, Disney has a formula for every single movie, but what makers HSM different are the catchy songs. I know all of the lyrics to the songs, and I didn't even know I knew all of the lyrics to the songs. Not only are they catchy songs, but they are also danceable songs. There are some lowkey tracking shots in "Get'cha Head in the Game," but it wasn't full on tracking shots. There were only a couple. Yeah, HSM is good, but I am only saying that because it's very nostalgic. I don't know if I would say it was really good if it just came out. Director: Alfred Hitchcock Release Date: March 18, 1963 I watched the Alfred Hitchcock film, The Birds. I had super high expectations for this film because Kelsey and Mrs. Lawson both told me it was a really good movie. I also think I had super high expectations because I've enjoyed the other Hitchcock films we watched in class. I am disappointed in this film. I think the concept is so peculiar and it was not scary at all. In the beginning, I thought the movie was a romance movie and, all of a sudden, these birds just flail themselves across the TV screen. I thought "the birds" were supposed to be symbolic of love, but I was extremely wrong. I believe Hitchcock used a technicolor camera while filming this. Melanie, the protagonist, has bright blue eyes and orange nail polish which were super vibrant in the movie. There were some really cool shots of Melanie driving to Bodega Bay on the coastal highway. You can see the mountains and the ocean, it was the calm before the storm of birds attacking. I think this movie is okay, I think it would've been better if I watched it with some friends. Director: Martin Scorsese Release date: February 19, 2010 Shutter Island is a psychological thriller and it is such a beautiful movie. The colors were mellow and dull as it takes place on an island with a hospital for the mentally ill. The color palette suited the setting really well in my opinion. This film is dark and moving, but it is a movie that you need to watch multiple times to understand it. There were multiple plot twists and I didn't predict anything correctly. Most of the time, I can predict at least one thing that will happen in a movie, but I failed. Martin Scorsese has many well known movies that I need to watch like Goodfellas and Irishmen. |
